Halifax International Security Forum November 2011

Inclusive Security Chair Ambassador Swanee Hunt and Manager of Policy Initiatives Angelic Young attended the Halifax International Security Forum in Halifax, Canada, Nov. 18–20.  The informal, unscripted event was designed to encourage free-flowing exchanges between panelists and participant experts on topics such as the responsibility to protect, the economy, the future of nuclear power, investments in postconflict societies and the rise of nongovernmental organizations.  This year, Foreign Affairs, the leading journal on foreign policy and international relations, served as media partner for the forum. Several key foreign ministers as well as high-profile US legislators and government representatives attended.

Ambassador Swanee Hunt emphasizes that the inclusion of women strengthens strategic security initiatives as Gen. Stephane Abrial listens.

Ambassador Hunt spoke on a panel titled “But, can we afford it? Smart security in the age of less” along with Gen. Stephane Abrial, Supreme Allied Commander for Transformation; Liam Fox, British member of parliament; Ljubica Jelušic, Slovenian minister of defense; and Jeanne Shaheen, US senator. Jeanne Meserve of the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University moderated the panel.
