Seizing Opportunity: The 10th Anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (October 2010)
As civil society organizations and governments around the world observed the 10th anniversary of landmark UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, Inclusive Security seized the opportunity presented by the unusually high attention paid to the issue. After encouragement by Inclusive Security and others, US Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton announced new US commitments and $44 million in funding, much of it earmarked for Afghanistan, at the UN Security Council Open Debate on October 26. Inclusive Security drafted a number of recommendations on what additional commitments governments could make to UNSCR 1325: a set targeted to the US government because of its unique position in the diplomatic and military communities, a set for national governments more generally, and a set on preventing sexual violence.

Synthesizing the Advice of Women Peacebuilders from Around the World for Senior UN Leaders (October 2010)
On October 21, Inclusive Security Director Carla Koppell moderated the Global Open Day at the UN attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, as well as new UN Women head Michelle Bachelet, Department of Peacekeeping Operations Under-Secretary-General Alain Le Roy, and Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe. The event synthesized the priorities communicated by more than 1,500 women during 25 national events around the world earlier this year which allowed women leaders to speak directly to UN leadership in their respective countries. Women peacebuilders also presented Secretary-General Ban with a petition calling for the UN to give more attention to women, peace, and security.

Supporting Women's Inclusion in the Final Implementation of Sudan's Peace Agreement (October 2010)
In late October, Inclusive Security facilitated a four-day strategic planning session in Juba with more than 30 members of a coalition of women leaders from the North, South, East, and Darfur. Through a collaborative process, the women finalized areas for advocacy and determined needs for skill building and women’s leadership for the coming year. They discussed regional priorities, such as the need to ensure a free and fair referendum, and emphasized the importance of women working across divides to ensure a more peaceful future for Sudan. The Voice of America radio in Sudan featured three of the women leaders working with Inclusive Security.

About The Institute for Inclusive Security
The Institute for Inclusive Security uses research, training, and advocacy to promote the inclusion of all stakeholders, particularly women, in peace processes. We work with a global network of well over 1,000 women leaders from more than 40 conflict regions. Our research gives policymakers new strategies to drive inclusion by examining tangible contributions of women peace builders. Our training provides leaders the specialized skills and knowledge to direct local, national, and international peacebuilding. Our advocacy to high-level policymakers promotes change that makes peace processes more broad-based, and thus sustainable.
