Inclusive Security Returns to American University Summer Peacebuilding and Development Institute

For the third consecutive year, Inclusive Security deputy directors
Evelyn Thornton and
Miki Jacevic taught an intensive five-day course,
“Inclusive Security: Increasing Women’s Participation in Peace Processes,” as part of American University’s Summer Peacebuilding and Development Institute. From June 7 to 11, 15 AU students joined conflict resolution and development professionals from six countries: Canada, Ethiopia, Kenya, Pakistan, Slovakia, and Sri Lanka. They explored inclusive security and contributions of women have made to peace processes. Through interactive exercises and role playing, small-group work, and case-study analyses, participants engaged in several key peacebuilding components, including negotiations; disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) structures; and transitional justice mechanisms.
A highlight of the course were the insights and practical knowledge shared by Women Waging Peace Network member Precious Dennis of Liberia. Dennis shared her work on security-sector reform and transitional justice in particular. By recounting her strategic approach and personal story, she powerfully conveyed the importance of dialogue to personal healing as well as to national political reconciliation.
