First Meeting of UN Civil Society Advisory Group on UNSCR 1325

Bineta Diop and Mary Robinson co-chair the Advisory Group’s first meeting in New York on March 6. The 10th anniversary of UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security takes place in October 2010. In partnership with other organizations, including Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative, Inclusive Security is working to make sure that the anniversary is not only an opportunity for celebration and reflection, but also a time for the UN, countries around the world, and civil society to take concrete, measurable, and positive actions.

Inclusive Security Chair Ambassador Swanee Hunt, along with former Irish President Mary Robinson, Executive Director of Femme Africa Solidarité Bineta Diop and others, helped create the Civil Society Advisory Group on Women, Peace, and Security. The purpose of the group is to bring civil society’s advice and experience to a High-Level Steering Committee of the heads of all relevant UN agencies and entities assembled to ensure a coherent and coordinated approach by the UN system to implementing UNSCR 1325.

Advisory Group members Don Steinberg and Sanam Anderlini participate in the Group’s March 6 meeting. Following the Advisory Group's first meeting on March 6, members put forward the first in what will be a series of recommendations to the High-Level Steering Committee. A key recommendation is for a ministerial-level conference to take place on October 28, the day before the Security Council meets to review progress on the resolution. At that time, UN member states and the UN itself would make commitments to specific actions they will take on this agenda over the next 3-5 years. Members also proposed that an Arria formula meeting take place at the Security Council, with briefings by women’s civil society groups, especially those from war-affected countries, on steps needed to effect change on the ground for women.

The Group is now trying to generate support for the commitments conference and related activities. Members will solicit input on draft recommendations from Women Waging Peace Network members and others in the coming weeks.

The Group meets next on June 8, 2010, at Inclusive Security's offices in Washington, DC.

Sanam Anderlini, Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, Ambassador Swanee Hunt, and Bineta Diop discuss advocacy strategies at the Advisory Group meeting.
