Biography

Shabana Fayyaz is an assistant professor at the Defense and Strategic Studies Department of Quaid-I-Azam University in Islamabad. She has lectured at the university for more than ten years and has been an assistant professor since October 2007, teaching courses on terrorism and South Asia, such as “The Dynamics of Pakistan Foreign and Defense Policy” and “Revolutionary Warfare.” The first in her family to attend a co-ed school, Ms. Fayyaz considers herself fortunate to have her mother-in-law’s support for continued studies; she is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Birmingham’s Political Science and International Studies Department. The topic of her research is terrorism in Pakistan, with related interest in practices of deradicalization. Among her recent publications are the articles “The Phenomenon of Terrorism in South Asia and its Impact on Human Security,” published in Pakistan, and “Responding to Terrorism: Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Laws,” published in the international journal Perspectives on Terrorism. Ms. Fayyaz is the coordinator of the Pakistan chapter of Women Without Borders and a member of the advisory board of the Peace and Collaborative Development Network. Last May, Ms. Fayyaz organized an international conference, “Countering Extremism: Strategies and Best Practices,” in collaboration with Pakistan Institute of Peace Studies. She serves on the editorial board of PIPS. Ms. Fayyaz was previously the host of television radio programs focusing on the roles of women and young people in extremism, an associate editor of the Pakistan Journal of Social Sciences, and a research fellow at Quaid-I-Azam University. She earned her master’s degrees in international studies and international relations from the University of Birmingham and Quaid-I-Azam University. (01.2010)
