Our Mission
Our Mission
The Institute for Inclusive Security uses
research,
training, and
advocacy to promote the inclusion of all stakeholders, particularly women, in peace processes. We work with a
global network of well over 1,000 women leaders from more than 40 conflict regions. Our research gives policymakers new strategies to drive inclusion by examining tangible contributions of women peace builders. Our training provides leaders the specialized skills and knowledge to direct local, national, and international peacebuilding. Our advocacy to high-level policymakers promotes change that makes peace processes more broad-based, and thus sustainable.
Research & Publications
Inclusive Security researches and documents women’s contributions to peace-building. Interviews with policymakers, civil society leaders, and donors identify best practices for including women and reveal untold stories of women leading peace efforts. We share this insight with policymakers, activists, and academics, offering new strategies to ensure the inclusion of women in peace processes. By engaging actors overlooked by most researchers, we build understanding of what has worked and what has failed when women have tried to prevent, resolve, and rebuild following conflicts. Our case studies, recommendations, policy briefs, and other publications are available at no charge.
Training Services
Inclusive Security offers customized trainings and consultations to help civil society and governments move past obstacles to peace. Since 1999, we have provided training and facilitated consultations for peace builders and policymakers including Afghans, Bosnians, Colombians, Guatemalans, Haitians, Iraqis, Israelis, Lebanese, Liberians, Nepalese, Palestinians, Peruvians, Russians, Rwandans, Sudanese, and Venezuelans.
Consultations convene diverse groups of women peace builders in conflict regions to enhance their skills and to create locally appropriate strategies for change focused on promoting women’s inclusion. Our unique approach integrates skills building—advocacy, coalition building, and message management—with teaching on peace-building, development, and security. We also support nonpartisan women’s legislative caucuses in various countries, offering training and technical advice on crafting and implementing legislation.
Trainings with policymakers explore women’s vital contributions to strengthening peace processes and encourage development of strategies to increase women’s participation.
Our training builds on our publications, including Inclusive Security: A Curriculum for Women Waging Peace and Inclusive Security, Sustainable Peace: A Toolkit for Advocacy and Action, two highly interactive resources for exploring women’s critical contributions to conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction.
Advocacy
Inclusive Security increases inclusion of women in peace processes through outreach to policymakers and policy shapers in governments, multilateral organizations, and civil society worldwide. Individual conversations, intimate seminars, and large meetings highlight the value of inclusion and shine a spotlight on exceptional women leaders.
By introducing policymakers to women leaders and realizing creative strategies that bring women to decision-making tables, Inclusive Security demonstrates the value that inclusion adds to the peace process. Inclusive Security assists women leaders to form coalitions, find common ground, and develop advocacy agendas, facilitate cooperation and dialogue between women experts and the rest of the policy community.
Inclusive Security also works with multilateral agencies and governments to train their staffs and develop plans for employing and engaging more women. Inclusive Security has extended its reach through strategic partnerships with organizations that use our research to improve their operations and deliver our messages to new audiences. We provide technical expertise and other support that allow our partners to test cutting-edge practices for achieving peace and security.
