10th Annual Colloquium

The Institute for Inclusive Security held its tenth annual colloquium from January 10 to 23, 2009.

The colloquium focused on training women leaders to build and sustain peace. It also marked the launch of Inclusive Security’s cutting-edge curriculum, a set of materials designed to enhance women’s capacity to prevent war, stop violence, and rebuild their communities after conflict.

Colloquium 2009 brought together 19 women leaders from 12 conflict areas: Afghanistan, Bolivia, Colombia, Israel, Kashmir, Lebanon, Liberia, Palestine, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Uganda.

Marini de Livera (Sri Lanka) and Rufa Guiam (the Philippines) speak on a panel at the Harvard Kennedy School.Participants spent a week in Cambridge, Massachusetts, attending an executive education program supported by the Women and Public Policy Program at Harvard University, participating in the course "Inclusive Security," taught by Ambassador Swanee Hunt, and taking part in meetings and events, including a public forum at the Harvard Kennedy School. They traveled to Washington, DC, to develop recommendations for elevating the participation of women in a range of thematic areas such as post-conflict reconstruction, negotiations, and democracy and governance. In individual meetings, small group discussions, and public forums, participants advocated to academics, government officials, directors of non-governmental organizations, journalists, and other experts.

The highlight of the colloquium was Policy Forum 2009, held January 21 in Washington, DC. At Inclusive Security's tenth annual luncheon, participants shared their recommendations with more than 450 policy shapers.
