Inclusive Security Contributes to Congressional Hearing on Women, Peace, and Security

Witnesses Janice Crouse, Betty Bigombe, Don Steinberg, Rebecca Okwaci, and Swanee Hunt at May 15 congressional hearing on women, peace, and security.

On May 15, 2008, the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs' Subcommittee on International Organizations, Human Rights, and Oversight held a hearing, "U.N. Security Resolution 1325: Recognizing Women's Vital Roles in Achieving Peace and Security." The purpose of the hearing was to inform the House's debate on House Resolution 146, which calls for US compliance to UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and highlights women's contributions to peace building and security. Ambassador Swanee Hunt, chair of The Initiative for Inclusive Security, and three members of the Women Waging Peace Network--Rina Amiri (Afghanistan), Betty Bigombe (Uganda), and Rebecca Okwaci (Sudan)--testified at the hearing.  Donald K. Steinberg, deputy president of Crisis Group, one of Inclusive Security's partners, was also a witness.
