Biography

Regina Sokan-Teah was elected to the House of Representatives in the 2005 general elections as representative of District 10 of Montserrado County. Serving a six-year term, Mrs. Sokan-Teah is on the defense committee, which has legislative oversight of security sector reform, a significant responsibility in this post-conflict country. She is also secretary-general of the Liberian Women Legislative Caucus. A native of River Gee County in the southeastern part of the country, Mrs. Sokan-Teah grew up on a farm until the death of her father when she was eight. She then moved to the mining town of Bong Mines in central Liberia to live with her older sister and attend school. She started kindergarten at the age of 12. Having excelled in math, Mrs. Sokan-Teah earned a bookkeeping and accounting diploma from the Booker Washington Institute. She put this degree to practice, rising through the ranks of the Forestry Development Authority to assistant internal auditor. Before working for the Forestry Development Authority, Mrs. Sokan-Teah was employed as a social worker with the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, Executive Mansion. The first in her large village of 75 houses to graduate from college, she holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Liberia. (01.2008)
