Biography

Precious Dennis Mitchell is a founding member of the Security for Women through Advocacy Coalition, where she is working to transform Liberians’ image of the security sector and dispel misconceptions of the army and police after 14 years of war. An advocate for women and girls’ participation in the security sector, Ms. Mitchell uses a door-to-door approach to inform women of opportunities available to them in the sector and to provide them with the opportunity to ask questions and get answers. She works closely with the Liberian National Police, United Nations Mission in Liberia police, Ministry of Defense, Armed Forces of Liberia, and Dyncorp. She received a certificate as a trainer in gender analysis and mainstreaming in a program organized by the Office of the Gender Advisor in the UN Mission in Liberia.
Also a social worker, Ms. Mitchell raises awareness about women suffering from HIV/AIDS as the gender and public relations officer for the Society for Women and AIDS in Africa in Monrovia. Ms. Mitchell participated in Liberia’s National AIDS Control Program and in a workshop hosted by the United Nations Development Fund for Women and ACTIONAIDS. The author of an HIV/AIDS handbook for parents and several case studies on women living with HIV/AIDS, Ms. Mitchell hopes to become an HIV/AIDS counselor. She has three children. (01.2008)
