Partnering with Sudanese women since 1999

In Washington, DC, at the United Nations, in Sudan, and elsewhere, Inclusive Security advocates for women’s participation in the implementation of the CPA and in the Darfur peace process. We host a network of over 100 Sudanese women peace builders from throughout the country as well as the diaspora.

Since its inception in 1999, Inclusive Security has worked with women peacebuilders in Sudan.  We have hosted several diverse delegations of Sudanese women to participate in training at Harvard University, and to conduct advocacy in Washington, DC.

In 2005, we collaborated with Government of Norway and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) in convening a symposium on Women’s Rights and Leadership in Post-Conflict Sudan held alongside the Oslo Donor’s Conference. We also hosted trainings for Sudanese women in Nairobi, Kenya, and Khartoum in 2005.

In 2006, staff traveled with Refugees International to Darfur to examine the role of women in helping resolve that conflict. Separately, we organized two consultations and a series of advocacy meetings involving more than 50 Sudanese women and several dozen policymakers.

Participants in the 2006 consultation formed a coalition that continues to advocate for increased womens’ inclusion in peacebuilding. The coalition united to call for greater gender sensitivity in proposed legislation governing political parties. Smaller sub-groups have also worked to create a women’s caucus in the national assembly, to address the upcoming census, and to provide civic awareness training related to the CPA.
