Celebrating the Visionary Child

Teens from ZUMIX participate in the celebration. On March 9, 2007, Hunt Alternatives Fund celebrated talented kids and youth arts organizations with musical and spoken word performances at the Revolving Museum in Lowell. The evening included an inspiring address by Rebecca Hoffberger, founder and artistic director of the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD, and the moving presentation of the Visionary Leader Award.

The Revolving Museum’s new exhibit, “Electrifying: the Art of Light and Illumination,” inspired business leaders, arts organizations, city councilors, young string musicians, funders, and teen mentors. Eleven young students from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell String Project delighted the audience with their performance, and Boston Arts Academy alumna Stephanie Gerard provoked discussion after reading an essay written through the Max Warburg Courage Curriculum.

Rebecca Hoffberger shared how the American Visionary Art Museum has been shaped by the Baltimore community and described how collaborative art-making has created a sense of belonging and permanency for kids. She encouraged visionary thinking and creation as ways to process and make connections in everyday life. Click here to see her keynote address.

Erica Downey, 17, an outstanding peer mentor at ZUMIX, received the first Visionary Leader Award. Earlier that day, a Revolving Museum student painted a mirror for Erica as a symbol of the recognition, echoing the inspirational quotation by Edith Wharton: “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”
