Biography

Amna Haroun Ahmed Ali was born in Northern Darfur, in Sudan. Her maternal great-grandfather was king of El Fashir, the region’s capital. In 1979, Ms. Ahmed Ali was one of the first Darfurian women graduates of the University of Khartoum, earning a degree in economics and social studies. She has done further studies in public administration and development planning.
From 1980-1999, Ms. Ahmed Ali worked in El Fashir in different municipal positions, including as head of the town council from 1992 to 1994 and deputy commissioner of the province from 1995 to 1997. Since 2001, she has headed the Department of Health and Social Affairs for the city of Khartoum. Currently, Ms. Ahmed Ali works with the Community Development Association on development projects in Darfur, and she continues to be an active voice for peace in the region.
