Biography

Jane Odwong Akwero is an associate member of the AMANI Uganda chapter. In addition to serving as a member of parliament in the Kitgum district for 10 years (from 1996 to 2006), Ms. Akwero was a member of the social services committee of the parliament of Uganda and the founder and executive committee member of the Great Lakes Parliament Forum on Peace (AMANI Uganda) from 1999 to 2006. Her other parliamentary positions included: member of the Forum on Food Security, Population, and Development; member of the forum on NEPAD; associate member of the forum on children; and associate member of the Uganda Woman Parliamentarian’s Association (UWOPA).
Ms. Akwero is a life member of the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative and the founder of the Kitgum Women’s Development Initiative. She received training in peace building and conflict management from the Mennonite Central Committee and Nairobi Peace Initiative in 1998, the Carter Centre in Nairobi in 2001, and the Patron-Kitgum Women’s Peace Initiative. She is currently pushing for the inclusion of women in the Juba peace talks between the government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army. Ms. Akwero is a nominee to the National Immigration and Citizens Board. She is a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement Party. (1.2007)
