Purpose
From December 8-13, 2006, Inclusive Security convened Liberian civil society leaders for a two-day consultation in Monrovia, Consolidating Peace: The Critical Role of Women in Rebuilding Liberia. The meeting was part of a visit led by Ambassador Swanee Hunt, and undertaken in partnership with the Women and Public Policy Program of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. In addition to the consultation, the delegation advocated to multilateral and bilateral aid donors around women leader’s priorities; provided training for staff of the Liberian Government in gender mainstreaming and operations; and consulted with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and members of her Cabinet regarding opportunities for engaging Liberian women.Consultations
Building on an earlier visit Ambassador Hunt led in April 2006, the December 2006 effort involved:
bringing together a diverse group of women to analyze the actual and potential role of women civil society leaders in reconstruction; - using Inclusive Security, Sustainable Peace: a Toolkit for Advocacy and Action to discuss the ways women have fostered reconstruction around the world; and
- formulating a revised agenda for Inclusive Security that defines priorities and next steps for enhancing women’s participation in Liberian peace building.
Next Steps
Inclusive Security staff continue to engage with Liberian women from civil society who attended the training. The women have formed a coalition which continues the work they began at the training, and they met again on January 6, 2007.
