Consultation participants meet with Norwegian Minister of International Development, Erik Solheim.Purpose
From November 6-16, 2006, Inclusive Security traveled to Khartoum, Sudan to assist Sudanese women to increase their participation in the Darfur peace process and the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). We coordinated two consultations and a series of advocacy meetings involving more than 50 Sudanese women and several dozen policymakers.

Consultations
The first consultation, Strategizing for Peace: The Critical Role of Women in Sudan, brought together about 40 women from across Sudan, including Darfur. The diverse group included some of Sudan’s most distinguished women leaders, including the federal Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. Anne Itto, parliamentarians and activists representing the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement (SPLM), and the opposition UMMA Party, as well as civil society leaders from throughout Sudan.

Two old friends are reunited after more than thirty years. Mary Abiong (left), Director of South Sudan Relief Rehabilitation Commission (SSRRC) and Chair person of the New Sudan Women Association (NESWA), and Amira El Fadil, Manager-Darfur Project/Sudanese Women General Union (SWGU), meet again after many years separated by conflict. The second consultation, Building Peace in Darfur: The Vital Role of Women Leader, brought together 15 Darfuri women. Participants represented various movements and political parties as well as the three major regions of Darfur. They included members of parliament who served as National Congress Party (NCP) negotiators in recent rounds of peace negotiation, civil servants, academics, and civil society. Several participants were part of the Gender Expert Support Team (GEST) that participated in the Abuja round of negotiations at which the Darfur Peace Agreement was signed.

Recommendations
Below are recommendations that workshop participants created as a result of the consultations:
Strategizing for Peace: The Critical Role of Women in Sudan

Building Peace in Darfur: The Vital Role of Women Leaders

Since the Consultation

Participants formed a coalition that continues to advocate for increased women’s inclusion in peacebuilding. The coalition united to call for greater gender sensitivity in proposed legislation governing political parties.  Smaller sub-groups have also worked to create a women’s caucus in the national assembly, to address the upcoming census, and to provide civic awareness training related to the CPA.

Inclusive Security staff are travelling to Sudan in September; check back soon for an update on our consultations with women leaders.
