Position: Chair of the Board of Directors
Organization: Public Broadcasting System
Country: Kosovo
Biography

One of only three women appointed to the 20-member United Nations Joint Interim Administrative Structure of war-ravaged Kosovo, Vjosa Dobruna served as the minister responsible for democracy building, civil society, and independent media. She helped draft an election regulation requiring that one in every three candidates for the region’s new assembly be a woman. Dr. Dobruna later co-chaired a conference that brought together women in the Kosovar parliament; this meeting led to the creation of the only multi-party caucus bridging ethnic and party lines in Kosovo. Dr. Dobruna was Kosova’s gender focal point for the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe in 2001, and she has organized women to train UN peacekeeping troops in gender issues. Dr. Dobruna is currently chair of the board of directors of Radio Television of Kosova, where she works to reform the only public broadcast media in Kosova to meet European standards of minority participation and gender perspective. She also practices pediatrics and runs the Safe House for battered women and children. (03.2006)
