Biography

Sue Brittion Under apartheid, Sue Brittion was detained and interrogated for two weeks by South Africa’s infamous security service for her role as a founding member of the End Conscription Campaign (ECC). The ECC was a coalition of human rights, religious, student, and women’s groups that opposed the conscription of white South Africans into an army that was used to maintain apartheid. Ms. Brittion helped organize the Network of Independent Monitors, a coalition of civil society organizations that monitors political violence, mediates between warring parties, and trains members to observe meetings, rallies, and marches. She has also trained international and local peace monitors and mediators, as well as activists involved in nonviolent resistance. In November 2005, she was ordained in the Anglican Church after serving as a deacon for a year. Following 23 years with the Diakonia Council of Churches, a coalition of religious organizations in the Durban area working for peace and social justice, Ms. Brittion retired yet serves in a local parish and continues her work for economic and environmental justice.
