Biography

Atema Eclai is the director of American and International programs at the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. A trainer in conflict resolution in her native Kenya and internationally, Ms. Eclai has worked with diverse groups of African women across tribal conflict lines to prevent children from going to war and trained others to talk to their governments about rape committed by soldiers in war zones. In 2003, Ms. Eclai completed her doctoral studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she focused on the role of women in conflict management. Ms. Eclai has trained leaders in the Ministry of Education, the Undugu Society for Homeless Boys, Jesuit Refugee Services, White South African Women Against Apartheid, and People for Peace. She has educated women in development groups and chaired sessions for African women at a number of UN Women’s Conferences. She is a member of Mobilized Mothers, Women Against Genital Mutilation, and Kenyan Women for Inheritance Rights. (7.2005)
