Senior Vice President Political Affairs and Public Education
League of Conservation Voters
The environmental movement is a compilation of critical issues relating to the preservation of our planet. From clean water and air to forestation and climate change, environmental activists are fighting for the recognition of these issues at the state and national levels. Tony Massaro believes it is important to unite environmental organizations into a singular movement focused on the overall human and biological health of the planet. He also aspires to convince the American public to hold politicians accountable for their legislative decisions on the environment, convincing American voters that the best candidates for office aren’t Republican or Democrat, but, rather, “green.” As the senior vice president of political affairs and public education at the League of Conservation Voters and League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, Tony has direct relationships with 32 state environmental leagues as well as national programs working to change environmental policy. He believes the power of a united front composed of these state leagues and their members will position the environmental movement as a strong challenger against politicians who have bent to the will of industrial interests. Through initiatives such as the National Environmental Scorecard, aimed at exposing politicians’ environmental misbehavior, Tony is working steadily to create a nation of leaders who will champion the rights of the planet and to “educate a new generation of Americans on clean air, clean water, global warming and other vital issues.”
Tony was the executive director of the Colorado Conservation Voters for four years, prior to his position at LCV/EF. In this capacity, he transformed CCV from a small public advocacy campaign into a major organization. Tony served Federico Peña for 18 years in the Denver Mayor’s Office as the director of environmental affairs and political director. He ran the field operations for Mayor Peña’s election and reelection as well as for several local initiatives, and assisted in the development of environmental policy and oversaw its implementation. Since then, the city of Denver has become a national leader in several environmental policy areas. Tony graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in political science.
