ZUMIX ZUMIX was founded in 1991; then, as now, it was the only arts organization in East Boston. Home to Logan International Airport, East Boston is a community in transition, with a growing population of new immigrants from Central and South America. ZUMIX provides voice, instrumental, and songwriting lessons in modern musical idioms (such as pop and hip-hop) to children as young as seven, as well as offering instruction in technical music production. Believing music can be a powerful tool in engaging people and creating social change, ZUMIX encourages teens to become leaders in their community by mentoring younger musicians and to highlight pressing social concerns by using music to reflect and comment on their environment. Today, the organization is deeply embedded in the East Boston neighborhood, producing an annual six-week free summer concert series and a program of music for patients in elder care and pediatric care facilities.
