The University of Massachusetts Lowell String Project

The University of Massachusetts Lowell (Umass Lowell) String Project was launched in 2001 as a partnership between Umass Lowell's Music Department and Lowell Public Schools (LPS). The String Project provides affordable instruction on violin, viola, and cello to 60 LPS students from grades 3 and 4 who might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn how to play a stringed instrument. The String Project also trains future music teachers—undergraduate and graduate students—who teach alongside a master teacher. Students also take a Creative Sound Play course, which introduces students in a playful way to musical concepts such as rhythm, pitch, form, composition, and improvisation, and take part in special workshops provided by visiting artists. There are currently 125 students in the program, drawn from 23 elementary and middle schools in the Lowell area.
