United South End Settlements

United South End Settlements (USES) was formed in 1960 when six settlement houses in Boston merged. The organization provides social services to residents of all ages, including preschool and after-school programs, adult education, and senior services. The Arts Incentives Program (AIP), which was founded in 1997 at McLean Hospital, provides a clinically informed arts-based program for high-risk girls. AIP works with some 50 girls each year; 15 percent are in foster care, 40 percent are court involved, 52 percent have been previously hospitalized for psychiatric reasons, and 40 percent are not living with a biological parent. These are girls other programs will not take. AIP offers a continuum of services: working one-on-one with girls, pairing two program participants, working in group sessions, and transitioning girls into “mainstream” arts and youth programs. In this final stage, girls are matched with an adult mentor who supports her as she transitions into a new program.
