City Stage Company
Founded by artistic director Susan Gassett in 1974, City Stage Company provides opportunities for children, youth, and families to engage in learning through drama. All activities develop themes (such as health or understanding of immigrants or people of other races) or specific components of the Massachusetts curriculum standards (including cooperation and group work, written and oral expression, understanding of point of view, and character motivation). Performances occur in community centers, libraries, museums, and other cultural and community institutions, and in-school classroom work occurs at multiple grade levels. City Stage also trains teachers to integrate drama techniques to engage their students. Resident theater of
Boston's Children's Museum, City Stage performances develop the Arthur character and focus on literacy; each year all 3,000 Boston Head Start and Kindergarten students attend at least one of its performances.
